Keep on scrollin’.

That’s right, you’ve got advice from Bea Johnson the queen of the Zero Waste movement and author of Zero Waste Home. Rob Greenfield the dude making a difference who went viral after wearing his trash for 30days. Rachelle Strauss the brains behind myzerowaste.com encouraging the UK to step up their environmental game. And Gittemarie from Gittemary.com covering all details, from DIY recipes to Zero Waste tips and hauls.

What #1 tip would you give to someone starting out on their Zero Journey?

Bea Johnson:
‘Freebies and junkmail are waste makers that people tend to overlook. But accepting these things not only creates a demand to make more, they are a waste of resources and once they are brought into our home, they add to the clutter and require effort to dispose of them later.

If for example, you simply take junkmail from the mailbox to the recycling can without taking steps to stop it, trees will be cut down to make more and more will be sent out to you. So the first thing one can do to stop waste and clutter from entering their home is to simply say no! Think before accepting something that is handed out to you. Turn down flyers, freebies, party favors, business cards, single use plastics (such as plastic bags), and fight junk mail. Refusing is the first rule to living a Zero Waste, simple lifestyle. Give it a try, you’ll be amazed how much stuff you’ll be able to stop from coming in.’

Rob Greenfield:
‘If you’re wanting to start reducing your waste, don’t get overwhelmed with realizing how many different ways you’re making trash. Instead make a list of all the positive changes you can make and then get excited about it. You’re on the right track. Now take it step by step and make one positive change at a time!’

Gittemarie:
‘My first and most important tip is related to getting to know your trash. Before jumping into zero waste, learn from your mistakes and eliminate one piece of trash from your bin at a time.’

Rachelle Strauss:
‘My #1 tip is to know what you are dealing with. Yep, you need to take a waste audit which means a pair of rubber gloves and delving into your bin! Write down everything you are throwing away, then look at that list and choose ONE item you could either swap for a more sustainable option, are prepared to go without or can divert that waste into a compost bin or recycling container.’

Kathryn Kellogg:
‘Just pick one thing and commit to doing it. You can’t sign up for a marathon if you haven’t learned to walk. Making better choices is contagious. Once you commit to doing one thing and it becomes a part of your routine, it will be so easy to make more changes. Working slowly will help you avoid burnout and cement positive change for the future.’

What is your favourite
Zero Waste item?

Rob:
‘Probably a mason jar that can be used as a cup for tea, smoothies, or water, a leftovers container, a soup cup, a storage container, a compost container to bring home scraps and then compost them, and so much more. It’s such a simple, inexpensive item that can be used in so many ways!’

Kathryn:
‘It would have to be a bidet attachment for the toilet. If you don’t have one, you don’t know what you’re missing. Beyond being 1,000x cleaner, it has cut toilet paper usage by 60% in my house.’

Bea:
‘My Klean Kanteen: it follows me everywhere, and thanks to it, I’ve not purchased a disposable water bottle since 2008.’

Rachelle:
‘My favourite Zero Waste item is very simple yet very powerful – it’s a list! I keep an inventory on a whiteboard of what’s in my freezer, what needs using up from the fridge, where I can buy items with less packaging, what we’re doing during the week so I can plan meals around our itinerary and even our kerbside collections because they’ve recently changed and I want to make sure I put the right things out each week!’
