Plastic bag 5p charge and chocolate Freddos

The 5p plastic bag charge shook us Brits.
We were angry, it was the Freddo inflation starting all over again.

But, more importantly, keep the number 500 in your head.
Did you know it can take 500 years to decompose a single-use plastic bag?

500 may not seem like a concerning number to some, but keep hold of it and you’ll be surprised.
The UK Government had counted that 7.6 million single-use plastic bags were given away in 2014 to customers at major supermarkets.
500So back to the number 500.
It takes 500 years for a plastic bag to fully decompose.
Unfortunately, we are still producing more plastic bags by the second.

IT GETS WORSE

The record of 7.6 million plastic bags given away in 2014 was only recorded at major UK supermarkets. In the same year, the US reported that 100 billion plastic bags were given away to their major supermarket customers.

Take note that these figures are only from large supermarkets, so in actual fact, the overall 2014 plastic bags given away would be at a larger number.

“Do you want some fossil fuels with your new purchase?”
“Err, no thank you.”

I’m sure that would be our reply to the question.
Unfortunately, the description of fossil fuel made carrying tool has been re-written to “Do you want a plastic bag?”

WHY ARE PLASTIC BAGS SO BAD?
Plastic bags are made from polyethylene a non-renewable source, better known as a fossil fuel.
We all understand how crucial it is to provide a sustainable future for those around us.

However, if we continue to produce plastic bags then we will bleed dry our fossil fuel resources.
And if this was to happen we would suffer incredibly.
(Not to mention the Freddo like pandemonium when no-one has oil or fuel for their vehicles.)

Apart from the non-renewable materials and energy required to produce a single plastic bag, there are wildlife consequences we need to consider. Many animals can confuse plastic bags as food and if consumed, they can cause digestive issues and suffocation.marine animals effected by pollution
BACK TO FREDDOS
It was a media explosion the increase in the price of the Freddo. And the 5p charge has created the same effect.
Many years ago it was normal practice to pay for a plastic bag, but between then and now plastic bags have been given away at no charge.

Some people were concerned more of the 5p charge then realising the positive change the UK Government were trying to achieve.

4 ECO-WAYS TO USE PLASTIC BAGS

1. Stop purchasing single-use bags and Bags for Life. Undoubtedly both will wear thin. They will need to be replaced and by doing so, you end up in a vicious cycle of purchase, use, then dispose of.

 2. Don’t throw any plastic bags away to landfill. Find uses for any you have at home. Think crafty! (Christmas cards, and makeshift children’s aprons for paint splashes.)

When I moved into my house a family member gave me a bag holder full of single-use plastic bags. Out of the 300, I have used 6. Luckily the plastic bag holder is shaped as a door draft stopper. So when it’s windy outside the plastic insulated bag has a purpose.

3. If you don’t have a plastic bag alternative remember to take them out with you to ensure you don’t purchase any more.

Leafeco tip: I keep plastic bags in my shoes (gross but stay with me). That way the plastic bags are in close reach before I leave my house so I am never without.

4. Purchase hard wearing eco-friendly bags that will last longer than plastic bags. And can be repaired if they were to wear out.
